The „White Turnip“ as a special landmark
Situated on a basalt cone in northern Odenwald, Otzberg fortification (Veste) is an important landmark of southern Hessen. Its most prominent feature is the brightly plastered keep, colloquially known as the White Turnip. The tower offers great views; even Frankfurt is visible, when the weather conditions are in favour.
The keep is the oldest part of the Veste, which was extended and fortified in the 16th century. In the course of its turbulent history, the fort with a double circular wall served different purposes: prison, youth hostel, hunting lodge, restaurant and museum. Depending on the opening hours of the restaurant, parts of the outdoor area can be visited.
